Two young hikers from Salt Lake City were rescued from Mount Shasta in California after enduring a 36-hour ordeal in freezing weather, the New York Post reported. The 19-year-old man and 20-year-old woman lost their way on treacherous terrain and became trapped between high cliffs. [1]

According to the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office, cited by the New York Post, the pair called for help at around 10:20 p.m. on Monday, October 12. They were too cold and exhausted to safely complete their descent after reaching the Avalanche Gulch area at an elevation of roughly 11,000 feet. [1]

The New York Post stated that the two individuals had planned only a single-day hike while a friend continued onward to the summit. By the time they contacted emergency services, local temperatures had dropped to between 14 and 16 degrees Fahrenheit. [1]

A frantic rescue operation was launched to locate the hikers, who were running out of mobile phone battery before being brought to safety. Mount Shasta reaches a total elevation of 14,179 feet in northern California. [1][4]
