A childminder who left more than 20 children unsupervised in her home has been jailed for two years, BBC News reported. Amanda Mathewson, aged 55, pled guilty to wilfully neglecting, abandoning, and exposing the children in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering or health injuries. The offenses took place at her home in Dunfermline, Fife, in August 2024. [1][2][3]
Mathewson was registered to care for a maximum of eight children under the age of 16 at any single time, according to BBC News. An internal Care Inspectorate investigation revealed that an unidentified staff member had previously tipped her off regarding unannounced inspections. [1]
The childminder's actions were exposed only after concerned parents monitored her movements and witnessed her departing from the home without the children, BBC News reported. [1]
Cases of child abandonment have occurred elsewhere in recent months, as FTMQ News reported earlier. In October 2026, a mother in Kissimmee, Florida, was arrested after leaving four children alone to take a trip to Las Vegas. Earlier that month, a mother abandoned her two children on a hiking trail in Poland to reach a mountain summit by herself. [5][6]
