Olympic champion Imane Khelif announced on Friday that she will make her professional boxing debut next month in Paris. Al Jazeera and Sportstar both report that the fight in December will be the first appearance in the ring for the 27-year-old Algerian since she won the welterweight gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. [1][2][3]

Al Jazeera reported that Khelif holds a professional licence from the boxing federation of France. She was previously forced to postpone her planned return to action in April after she suffered an injury in training. [1]

The announcement was made during a news conference where Khelif appeared alongside her coach Kamel Abdesselam and promoter Yacin Berrabah. Al Jazeera reported that she is set to fight Clari. [1]

Khelif secured a silver medal at the 2022 World Boxing Championships before winning her Olympic title in 2024. Her participation at the Paris Games followed a gender controversy, after she was disqualified from the 2023 World Championships due to sex verification test results. [1][3][6]
