Independent Australian MP Helen Haines is in a critical yet stable condition after being struck by a vehicle outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria. According to ABC News Australia and the Guardian, emergency services were called to Murphy Street at about 3:30pm on Monday after a white Toyota LandCruiser hit the 65-year-old politician. She was retrieving items from the boot of her vehicle when the incident occurred, ABC News Australia reported. [1][2][3][4][7]

The Guardian reported that witnesses saw the vehicle perform a U-turn before ramming Haines twice in what appeared to be a targeted attack. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the incident a deliberate act, and ABC News Australia reported that counter-terrorism police are currently involved in the investigation. [1][2][3][4][8]

Victoria Police arrested 43-year-old Tarrawingee resident Brendan Nugent at the scene, according to ABC News Australia and the Guardian. Following the attack, Haines was airlifted from Wangaratta to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne to undergo emergency surgery, the Guardian reported. [1][2][4]

Haines is a former nurse and health researcher who has served as the independent member of parliament for the federal seat of Indi in Victoria since 2019. As FTMQ News reported earlier, local bystander Ricky Jefferies performed a citizen's arrest on the suspect at the scene before police arrived. [12][14]
