A man accused of deliberately running down Australian independent MP Helen Haines with a vehicle has been denied bail. The Australian Federal Police commissioner condemned a growing environment of abuse against politicians, noting that one person is being charged every week for allegedly threatening members of parliament. Victoria Police and federal authorities stated that they had no prior intelligence to suggest the suspect would launch the attack, according to the Guardian. [1]
The 43-year-old suspect, named by media as Brendan Nugent, was arrested outside the MP office in Wangaratta, northern Victoria, on Monday. Euronews, the Daily Mail, and ABC News Australia reported that police charged him with dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and the federal offense of harming a public official. The Daily Mail noted that the suspect allegedly rammed the 65-year-old lawmaker twice against another vehicle as she retrieved items from her car. [2][3][4]
The Guardian and Al Jazeera reported that Haines lost a leg as a result of the collision. ABC News Australia and Al Jazeera noted that she remains in hospital in a critical condition. The Independent further reported that the driver reversed to hit her a second time, while ABC News Australia confirmed that police have not ruled out laying further charges. [1][4][7][10]
Haines has served as the independent member of Parliament for the Victorian electorate of Indi since 2019. Before her political career, she spent more than 30 years working in nursing, midwifery, and academic health research. As FTMQ News reported earlier, she was taken to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne for emergency surgery following the incident. [12][16]
