A 43-year-old man named Brendan Nugent will appear in court on Wednesday following an alleged attack on independent federal lawmaker Helen Haines, according to the Daily Mail. Mr Nugent was arrested on Monday outside the electorate office of Dr Haines on Murphy Street in Wangaratta, Victoria. As FTMQ News reported earlier, counter-terrorism police investigated the incident after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the vehicle strike as a deliberate act. [2][3][7][12][13]

The Daily Mail reported that Mr Nugent allegedly rammed Dr Haines with his Toyota LandCruiser against another vehicle twice while she was retrieving items from her car boot. He faces charges including dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. According to the Daily Mail, Dr Haines has had one leg amputated at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne while doctors try to save her other leg. [2][3][12]

The Guardian and ABC News both reported that Kim Leadbeater, the sister of murdered British politician Jo Cox, urged Australians to find common ground in response to the attack. Ms Cox was killed in 2016 by a far-right extremist outside a library in the United Kingdom, as noted by the Guardian. [1][8]

Dr Haines remains in a critical condition in hospital, according to the Daily Mail and the Guardian. [1][2]
