Australian independent MP Helen Haines was critically injured on Monday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle outside her electorate office on Murphy Street in Wangaratta, Victoria. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as a deliberate act, reporting that the driver executed a U-turn before hitting the lawmaker. ABC News Australia and The Guardian reported that the incident occurred around 3:30pm while Haines was retrieving items from the boot of her vehicle. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]

Haines suffered severe lower-body injuries after being struck multiple times by a Toyota LandCruiser, according to the Daily Mail and ABC News Australia. She underwent emergency surgery in Melbourne overnight and remains in critical condition amid fears she could lose a leg. Local barber Ricky Jefferies grabbed and detained the accused driver at the scene shortly after the attack, as reported by The Guardian. [1][2][4][6]

Authorities identified the suspect as 43-year-old Brendan Nugent, whom the Daily Mail described as an anti-Israel activist and radical environmentalist. Counterterrorism police are leading the investigation, and no formal charges had been laid as of Tuesday morning. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke confirmed that counterterrorism authorities are involved in the ongoing probe. [1][4][7]

Haines has represented the federal Victorian seat of Indi as an independent MP since the 2019 election. Before entering politics, she worked as a nurse and health researcher. As FTMQ News reported earlier, emergency services rushed to the scene shortly before 4:00pm on Monday, leading police to close Murphy Street in both directions. [12][15]
