More than a dozen anti Immigration and Customs Enforcement protesters were arrested on Wednesday after blocking traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge. According to the New York Post and cedarnews.net, demonstrators shut down traffic on the iconic span in broad daylight. ABC7 New York, PIX11, and Rolling Out reported that the demonstration was tied to a recent ICE shooting in Marble Hill. [1][2][3][4][5]
The New York Post reported that a group of around 30 activists gathered at the bridge. Video from the scene showed demonstrators sitting cross-legged on the bridge while chanting slogans against the police and immigration enforcement. Some activists wore shirts with messages including Sanctuary Campus Now and Have you seen my neighbor, according to the New York Post. [1]
The protest caused severe traffic delays in the area. The New York Post reported that demonstrators shut down all entrances on the Manhattan side of the structure, backing up vehicle traffic for miles before law enforcement officers moved in to make arrests. [1]
The Brooklyn Bridge spans the East River to connect the New York City boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. The cable-stayed suspension bridge officially opened on May 24, 1883, and was the first fixed crossing built over the East River. [6][7]
