Democrat Abdul El Sayed has defeated Republican Mike Rogers to win Michigan's United States Senate race, becoming the first Muslim elected to the upper chamber of Congress. The Guardian and thejournal.ie both reported that El Sayed declared victory early on Wednesday at the Michigan Democrats' headquarters in Detroit. The victory contributed to a decisive Democratic majority in the Senate after the party gained control of the chamber on Tuesday, according to The Guardian. [1][2][5]

The election followed a high-profile battle in the swing state. Thejournal.ie reported that El Sayed's campaign bucked the Democratic Party establishment and led to the defection of his primary opponent prior to election day. According to Fox News, the progressive doctor overcome political attacks directed at his faith and alleged foreign ties to secure the seat. [1][2][5]

El Sayed is an American epidemiologist, public health administrator, academic, and politician. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the campaign saw attacks from Republican allies and former President Donald Trump, who questioned El Sayed's loyalty and called him a jihadist during a rally in Port Huron, Michigan. El Sayed denied all alleged ties to the Muslim Brotherhood during the campaign. [1][5][10][14][15]

Addressing supporters at his election headquarters in Detroit after the results came in, El Sayed stated that he was proud and honoured to stand as the state's senator-elect, according to thejournal.ie. [2]
