United States Speaker of the House Mike Johnson spoke to supporters in Shreveport, Louisiana, following major Democratic gains in the 2026 midterm elections. Euronews and Al Jazeera both report that Johnson expressed disappointment over the election results. House Democratic leadership declared victory before midnight on Tuesday night after taking control of the Senate and securing a House majority, the Washington Examiner reported. [1][2][3][4][13]

According to Euronews, Johnson promised that Republicans would double down on their agenda and fight to take back the House in 2028. The Washington Examiner reported that Johnson told supporters it appeared history would be kept regarding Republicans losing their majority. Al Jazeera reported that Johnson also spoke about Communism causing millions of deaths during his speech. [1][2][5][6]

Johnson represents Louisiana's 4th congressional district and has served as the 56th Speaker of the House since 2023. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Johnson had previously claimed that pre-election polling underestimated Republican voter enthusiasm ahead of the midterm contests. [13][16]

With Democratic victories secured, Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is positioned to assume leadership of the incoming House majority, according to the Washington Examiner. [3][4]
