Democratic candidate Abdul El Sayed and Republican candidate Mike Rogers clashed over war powers, Medicare for all, and allegations regarding the Muslim Brotherhood during separate interviews broadcast on Fox News on Friday. The candidate appearances occurred in Detroit eleven days before the election scheduled for November 3. Fox News reported that Mr El Sayed accused his rival of questioning his loyalty to the United States, while Mr Rogers doubled down on claims that his opponent had embraced the ideology of the organization. [1]

During the broadcast, anchor Bret Baier questioned Mr El Sayed about a 2012 statement regarding former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, who was affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood. The confrontation comes after FTMQ News reported earlier that Mr Rogers had previously questioned Mr El Sayed during a Michigan Senate debate about an alleged 2012 open letter to the group. [1][16]

The high profile contest is attracting significant national political figures in its final stretch. According to the Washington Examiner, former President Barack Obama will campaign for Mr El Sayed on Saturday, while Senator Bernie Sanders will travel to Grand Rapids on Sunday. The outlet also reported that President Donald Trump is scheduled to headline a campaign rally for Mr Rogers on Sunday. [3]

The Sunni Islamist organization known as the Muslim Brotherhood was founded in Egypt in 1928 by Hassan al Banna. Its ideological influence spread widely across the region, and its candidate Mohamed Morsi briefly won the Egyptian presidential election in 2012 following the Arab Spring uprisings. [12][15]
