Firearms discharges in the West Midlands Police force area have fallen by more than half over the past six years, BBC News reported. The decline marks a change for an area that was labelled the gun crime capital of England and Wales more than a decade ago. [1][2]
More than ten years ago, the region recorded higher numbers of firearms offences per head than any other force area in England and Wales. Rival gang violence contributed to frequent shootings during that period, BBC News reported. [1]
Simeon Moore, a former member of the Johnson Crew gang, told BBC News that shootings occurred daily in the past, including incidents that were never reported to the police. [1]
BBC News reported that the reduction in gun crime follows combined efforts from law enforcement and local community groups. West Midlands Police is the territorial police force responsible for policing the metropolitan county of West Midlands. [1][2][7]
In short
- Firearms discharges in the West Midlands fell by more than half over six years.
- The West Midlands previously had the highest rate of firearms offences per head in England and Wales.
- BBC News attributed the drop in shootings to policing and community efforts.
