Former Tourism Australia chief financial executive Quan Liu, also known as Christine Liu, has admitted to defrauding Australian taxpayers of nearly $50,000, the Daily Mail reported. The 50 year old former official misused public funds for business-class travel and accommodation during trips to China taken between 2022 and 2023. She also admitted to falsifying official documents to assist her cousin in securing an Australian visa. [1]
A court heard that Liu took six business-class flights to China using public funds over the 14-month period, according to the Daily Mail. The trips were made so that Liu could visit her parents, who were affected by the Covid pandemic. The court ordered her to repay the public funds spent on the personal trips. [1]
Tourism forms a significant part of the Australian economy, serving domestic and international visitors. According to the World Tourism Organization, Australia ranks as the fortieth most visited country in the world. Prior to the fraud, tourism represented Australia's fourth-largest export in the 2018 and 2019 financial year, generating A$60.8 billion and accounting for 3.1 percent of national gross domestic product.
