England head coach Brian McDermott has left half-back Mikey Lewis out of the matchday squad for the opening Rugby League World Cup fixture against Tonga on Saturday, BBC News reported. Wigan player Harry Smith has been chosen to start in the half-back positions alongside team captain George Williams. [1]
BBC News reported that Lewis, who plays for Hull KR, was omitted entirely from the bench for the upcoming match. Lewis had previously secured a place in the tournament squad ahead of 2025 Super League Man of Steel winner Jake Connor. Williams, who plays for Warrington, and Smith were chosen as the primary half-back options following an inconsistent season for Lewis. [1]
The squad selection comes as England prepares to begin its campaign in the international tournament, which is run by International Rugby League. According to the Guardian, 22-year-old Wigan forward Junior Nsemba is also part of the England setup for the opening match against Tonga. [3][11]
England will play Tonga on Saturday morning to open their tournament schedule, according to the Guardian and BBC News. [1][3]
