Seaside communities along the east coast of England have lost at least 183 homes to coastal erosion and landslides over the past 16 years, the Guardian and UA.NEWS reported. Local councils proactively demolished the properties along the Yorkshire and East Anglian coasts. The action was taken after officials judged that the homes were too vulnerable to remain safely occupied. [1][2]
The total cost of demolishing the threatened homes reached 1.1 million pounds, according to the Guardian. The Environment Agency contributed approximately 482,000 pounds towards clearing 61 homes that were at risk of collapsing. Local councils paid for the remainder of the demolition costs along the eastern coast. [1]
The east of England tends to be low lying, while the highest upland areas of the country are located in the north and west. Terrain across England includes sea cliffs, lower hills, and major upland areas that reach almost 1,000 metres high. [4]
