Enrollment in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as Snap, decreased by 13 percent over the past year following new restrictions, the Guardian reported. The number of people receiving food stamps dropped from 41.6 million in July 2025 to 36.5 million in June 2026. [1]

The decline occurred after the implementation of the One Big Beautiful Act. Stakeholders expressed concern that the drop in support leaves more people at risk of food insecurity, forcing individuals to seek help from food banks or go hungry. [1]

Donald Trump took office as the 47th president of the United States on January 20, 2025. The policy changes took effect alongside a Republican federal government trifecta, with the party holding simple majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. [1][3]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, a federal task force recently uncovered nearly 42 million dollars in stolen food stamp benefits across the country, implicating more than 40 defendants. [7]
