Louisiana Republican Mike Johnson marked three years as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives after securing 526 million dollars in fundraising, Fox News reported. His tenure faces uncertainty as upcoming midterm elections threaten the Republican majority in the House of Representatives. [1]
According to Fox News, Johnson assumed the role three years ago following a unanimous vote by fellow House Republicans. His election ended three weeks of federal government paralysis caused by the removal of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted in the first successful rebellion against a sitting speaker in United States history. [1]
James Michael Johnson is the 56th speaker of the House and is currently serving his fifth congressional term. He was born on January 30, 1972, in Shreveport, Louisiana, and worked as a constitutional law attorney before serving in the Louisiana House of Representatives from 2015 to 2017. He was first elected to represent Louisiana's 4th congressional district in 2017 and became the first person from Louisiana to serve as speaker. [2][3]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, Johnson recently urged President Donald Trump to cancel plans to livestream the December 3 firing squad execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan. Johnson warned that broadcasting the execution could be used as a recruitment tool for future terrorists. [4][5]
