Former England fast bowler James Anderson has expressed sadness after being released by Lancashire, but he stopped short of announcing his retirement from cricket. BBC News and Sky Sports both report that the 44-year-old was informed by the county last Monday that he would not receive a new contract. [1][2][4]
Writing on Instagram in his first public statement since the decision, Anderson stated that if it had been up to him, it would not have ended like this. BBC News reported that Anderson had planned to continue playing through the summer of 2027, despite turning 45 years old next year. [1][2][4]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, Lancashire chose not to offer Anderson a contract for the 2027 season after the team finished next to bottom in Division Two of the County Championship. Anderson had taken 50 wickets at an average of 17 in Division Two during the previous season, and he holds the record for taking 704 Test wickets during his international career for England. [10]
Anderson first represented Lancashire in 2001, making his departure the end of a 25-year stint with the county. Cricinfo, France 24, and The Cricketer all confirmed his upcoming departure from the club while his future plans remain unannounced. [1][3][5][6]
