The Food and Drug Administration could approve MDMA-assisted therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder as early as January 2027, the New York Post reported. Leading psychedelics advocate Rick Doblin stated that he is very optimistic about the potential approval. However, a major roadblock could still prevent millions of Americans from accessing the new treatment option. [1]

MDMA, which is also known as ecstasy or molly, is widely recognised for its euphoric effects and its history as a party drug. The substance currently has no approved medical uses under the Food and Drug Administration. Researchers have spent years investigating whether the drug can be safely used to help treat mental health conditions. [1]

Psychedelic therapy involves using psychedelic drugs to treat mental disorders and improve general well-being. Other drugs studied for potential therapeutic use include psilocybin, LSD, mescaline, and DMT. Rick Doblin is an American advocate who founded the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies. [2][3]

As of 2021, psychedelic substances remain controlled substances in most countries across the world. Outside of formal clinical trials, psychedelic therapy is generally not legally available to the public, with only limited exceptions. [2]
