The UK Conservative Party has pledged to invest 10 billion pounds in a new air defence system named Britannia Shield if the party wins the next general election. The Journal, BBC Politics and The Guardian all reported that the proposed scheme is designed to protect the country against long range missiles and incoming drones. [1][2][3][6]

The project aims to establish an integrated network of radar, command and control systems, and interceptor missiles. BBC Politics reported that the proposal comes as NATO allies warn of Russian drone incursions into allied airspace. [1][2]

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has insisted the proposal is not a gimmick, according to The Journal. However, Badenoch distanced herself from press release materials issued by her own party that described the scheme as a British Iron Dome. The Journal and The Guardian both reported that Badenoch denied the proposal was directly comparable to Israel's Iron Dome system. [1][3][7][10]

Israel's Iron Dome system can intercept short range rockets fired from up to 70km away, according to The Journal. The Conservatives plan to formally announce the details of their military programme during their party conference, according to reports in The Guardian. [1][6]
