Dozens of Republican candidates backed directly by United States President Donald Trump lost their midterm election races, according to reports by the Irish Examiner, BreakingNews.ie and the Guardian. The Irish Examiner reported that 11 Senate candidates endorsed by Donald Trump lost their races, while two others were still waiting for results on Wednesday evening. The Irish Examiner and the Guardian both tally that only half of the 26 candidates supported by Donald Trump for the Senate had won by 5:00pm Eastern Time on Wednesday. [1][3][5]

Republicans were swept out of power following a surge by Democrats, PBS NewsHour reported. According to PBS NewsHour, voters were dissatisfied with Donald Trump, the economy and the war with Iran. The outlet stated that Republicans lost most of the Democratic seats they had targeted and also failed to hold onto seats they expected to retain. [2][4]

PBS NewsHour also reported that Republicans in eight states had redrawn congressional boundaries over the past year to protect a thin House majority. This effort took place at the urging of Donald Trump but failed to secure the intended advantage. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the Republican Party suffered major losses nationwide, which included losing a Texas Senate seat held by the party for more than 30 years. [2][4][7]

The Never Trump movement represents conservative Republicans who oppose Donald Trump and Trumpism in favour of traditional conservative policies. Donald Trump had previously used his endorsements to influence midterm primary races, as FTMQ News reported earlier, including primary defeats for Representative Thomas Massie and Senator Bill Cassidy.
