Democrats have secured major victories across the United States in the 2026 midterm elections, dealing a severe political blow to the Republican Party. The Guardian and the South China Morning Post both reported that Democrats scored key wins as voters delivered a verdict on the leadership of President Donald Trump. The Financial Times reported that Democrats clinched a majority in the Senate. [1][6][8]

Following the electoral losses, Donald Trump posted on Truth Social to distance himself from the outcome, according to the Daily Express. The Guardian, the Daily Express, Forbes, and Anadolu Ajansi all reported that Trump claimed Republicans would have won in a landslide if he had been on the ballot himself. The Guardian and the Daily Express noted that Trump had previously urged voters during the campaign to pretend that he was on the ballot, but later stated that he was prepared to accept the results. [1][4][9][10]

The Republican Party suffered a worse performance than expected, with internal polling failing to anticipate the scale of potential losses in the Senate and the House of Representatives, Al Jazeera reported. France 24 reported that a Democratic-controlled House of Representatives would impose the first real political constraints on Trump since he returned to office. [2][7]

Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance won the presidential election in November 2024. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the 2026 midterm elections involved contests for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 seats in the Senate during the final two years of the presidential term.
