The Irish government must fund a long-awaited tourism plan for Malin Head to help ease visitor pressure on traditional hot spots such as Killarney, the Derry Journal reported. Speaking during a Dáil debate on the Our Rural Future 2036-2031 initiative, Deputy Charles Ward urged support for the proposal to create a major visitor attraction at the site. [1]
Ward stated that the Malin Head Visitor Plan was launched by Donegal County Council almost ten years ago and offers a clear template to expand tourism across Inishowen. The 100% Redress TD emphasized that the local council needs direct financial support from the national government to progress the project and noted that destinations like Killarney in County Kerry are increasingly suffering from capacity issues. [1]
Malin Head is the most northerly point of mainland Ireland, situated in the townland of Ardmalin on the Inishowen peninsula in County Donegal, approximately 16 kilometres north of Malin village. The headland features a signal tower built on Altnadarrow in 1805 to watch for French invasions during the Napoleonic Wars, which was later used for flag and semaphore signaling. The site also hosted a Marconi Wireless Station in 1902 that sent the first commercial transatlantic wireless message, and it continues to operate a weather station whose reports contribute to Irish forecasts and the BBC Shipping Forecast. [2][5]
The call to redirect tourist traffic comes as Killarney faces local infrastructure challenges. As FTMQ News reported earlier, authorities in County Kerry recently shifted roadworks on the R876 in Killarney to overnight hours after severe traffic congestion prompted police warnings for drivers to avoid Park Road.
