Donald Trump Selective Endorsements Shape Republican Midterm Primary Outcomes

President Donald Trump has provided endorsements in most Senate and House races this year as Republicans attempt to retain their majorities, but he has declined to endorse candidates in select toss-up races. The Washington Examiner reported that Trump refrained from endorsing Republican candidates running in firmly Democratic seats while also snubbing specific candidates in competitive contests. [1]

Trump used his primary endorsements to help defeat existing members of Republican caucuses. According to the Washington Examiner, Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana both lost their primary races to candidates who received endorsements from Trump. [1]

The endorsement decisions come as Trump maintains a active campaign schedule. The South China Morning Post reported that Trump reinstated two rallies in Kansas and Iowa on Friday after briefly cancelling them, telling audiences that Republicans still have a shot at winning the upcoming midterm elections. Political analysts and pollsters expect Congress to shift away from the party holding the White House during the 2026 midterms, according to the Washington Examiner. Trump could face a changing relationship with the broader Republican establishment following the election results. [2]
