Rock band The Strokes performed a homecoming concert at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, New York, on Friday, October 2. Consequence, NME, and Rolling Stone reported that United States Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made a surprise appearance on stage to introduce the group. Rolling Stone reported that approximately 40,000 fans attended the outdoor show. [1][2][3]
According to NME and Rolling Stone, Sanders praised the band during his introduction for standing up for economic justice, fighting racism, and recognizing healthcare as a human right. Rolling Stone reported that Ocasio-Cortez called the group the greatest rock band of their generation. Rolling Stone also noted that both politicians reminded the crowd to vote with Election Day approaching in just over a month. [2][3]
Consequence reported that The Strokes designed the concert as their own mini festival following a year of appearing at major festivals. Supporting acts for the Queens performance included Beach House, TV on the Radio, and Fcukers, as Consequence and NME reported. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Sanders has served as a United States senator from Vermont since 2007. [1][2][8]
The Strokes formed in New York City in 1998 with a lineup featuring lead vocalist Julian Casablancas, guitarists Nick Valensi and Albert Hammond Jr., bassist Nikolai Fraiture, and drummer Fabrizio Moretti. Dream pop band Beach House was formed in Baltimore in 2004 by Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally. [6][7]
