Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez promised a firm approach to potential safety failures following a rail collision in Toledo province that killed 68 people on Wednesday. Euronews reported that Sánchez declared the entire country in mourning and stated that the government priority is to support victims and locate survivors. [1]

The crash occurred when two high speed trains collided south of Madrid. As FTMQ News reported earlier, initial reports placed the death toll at ten before official counts rose to 68 dead with 58 people receiving hospital treatment. Rail services were suspended between Madrid, Ciudad Real, Seville, and Andalusia following the collision. [1][2][3]

Transport Minister Óscar Puente reported an error and inexplicable circumstances surrounding the incident. As FTMQ News reported earlier, investigators are focusing on an unexplained command sent from a central control centre in Madrid that permitted a train to resume running prior to the crash. [1][3]
