A shark struck a fisherman's kayak from underneath about a mile off the California coast on October 26, knocking him into the ocean. The New York Post reported that the incident occurred near Leffingwell Landing in San Luis Obispo County. [1]

According to the New York Post, the fisherman managed to climb back onto his kayak and attempted to paddle to safety. However, the Cambria Fire Department stated that punctures in the hull caused the vessel to take on water, forcing the man to swim the remaining distance back to the beach. [1]

The man was not injured during the encounter and reached the shore safely. Fire officials subsequently deployed a boat to recover the submerged kayak and the fisherman's gear. [1]

California became the 31st state of the United States on September 9, 1850. The state features diverse geography that includes extensive coastal regions. [3]
