Rescue teams are searching for 11 missing people after a vessel capsized off the coast of Baja California, Mexico, on October 16. The United States Coast Guard, CGTN, and Xinhua reported that 16 people have been rescued from the water. [1][5][6]
Al Jazeera reported that all 16 survivors are Mexican nationals. Survivors told officials that 27 people were on board the boat before it capsized. Al Jazeera, U.S. News, and ABC News noted that search operations were still underway over the weekend. [1][2][3][4]
According to Al Jazeera, several rescued individuals suffered severe injuries consistent with shark bites. United States Coast Guard personnel provided first aid to the victims while transporting them to San Diego, California. The United States Coast Guard and the United States Navy deployed multiple aircraft and boats to assist in the rescue operation. [1]
The Baja California peninsula is located in northwestern Mexico and separates the Gulf of California from the Pacific Ocean. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the region was recently struck by Hurricane Simon, which brought heavy rain and strong winds to the area. [7][9]
