California state Senator Scott Wiener has won the election for California's 11th Congressional District, succeeding Nancy Pelosi in the United States House of Representatives. The Daily Mail and the New York Post both reported that Wiener, a 56-year-old Democrat, defeated San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan after she conceded on Wednesday afternoon. The victory marks the end of Pelosi's nearly four-decade representation of the San Francisco seat. [1][3]

The New York Post reported that Chan conceded after the latest vote tally showed Wiener holding a 10 percentage point lead, securing 55.5 percent of the vote compared to Chan's 44.5 percent. Chan conceded despite having received the endorsement of Pelosi, as reported by the Daily Mail and previously noted by FTMQ News. [1][3][9]

Wiener is known as a prominent advocate for LGBTQ rights and championed legislation allowing transgender inmates to request placement in women's prisons, according to the Daily Mail. Pelosi served in the House since 1987 and was the 52nd speaker of the House, serving as leader of the House Democrats from 2003 to 2023. [1][4]

Separately, the South China Morning Post reported that Democratic Congressman Hakeem Jeffries announced his bid for House speaker on Wednesday. The announcement followed Democrats winning a majority of seats in the United States midterm elections. [2]
