Poundland has filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators, BBC News reported on October 29. If the High Court approves the filing, the discount retailer will receive 10 days of breathing space to secure a rescue deal. [1]

Barry Williams, the managing director of Poundland, sent a memo to workers explaining that the American owner of the chain had restricted access to funding, according to BBC News. The company currently employs 12,000 staff members across 600 stores in the United Kingdom and Ireland. [1]

The investment firm Gordon Brothers bought Poundland from the Polish retail business Pepco Group for a nominal £1 in 2025. BBC News reported that Gordon Brothers placed the struggling retail business up for sale in September, little over a year after the purchase. [1][3]

Poundland previously operated roughly 825 stores in mid 2025 before store closures reduced its total footprint as part of a broader corporate restructuring. The retail chain also operates in the Republic of Ireland under the brand name Dealz. [3]
