Danish retail firm Salling Group is testing humanoid robots at a Føtex supermarket near Copenhagen to assist with restocking shelves. Euronews reported that the trial aims to ease the workload for human staff, allowing employees to focus more on customer service while the machines operate mainly at night. [1]
The robots were developed by Danish start-up Hive Robots and constructed by Unitree in China. According to Euronews, the machines have been undergoing training since June. Human operators currently guide every action to help the artificial intelligence learn how to manage various retail products. [1]
Human and robot interaction is a multidisciplinary field that includes robotics, artificial intelligence, and design. A subfield called physical human and robot interaction focuses on device design to ensure that people can interact safely with robotic systems. [2]
Salling Group aims to have the robots restocking supermarket shelves independently by early 2027. Euronews reported that the machines will carry out repetitive movements for hours, picking up items and placing them onto store shelves during nighttime hours when stores are closed. [1]
