Meghan Markle's father arrested in Florida on child abuse material charges

Thomas Markle, the father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, was arrested on Friday morning in Florida by federal agents, according to reports from Euronews, The Guardian, Fox News, and the South China Morning Post. The Guardian reported that US prosecutors confirmed the 82-year-old was taken into custody near Tampa early on Friday. Euronews and the South China Morning Post added that the arrest was made by US federal agents in connection with charges related to child sexual abuse material. [1][2][4][5]

The arrest follows an investigation launched after his son, Thomas Markle Jr, found images at his father's former home in Cebu in the Philippines, according to Euronews and Fox News. Fox News reported that Markle Jr told reporters he discovered hundreds or thousands of images in boxes while clearing out the property and reported them to police. The New York Post reported that sources said the FBI arrested Markle Sr for alleged possession of material found in his home in the Philippines and a storage unit in Mexico. [1][4][7]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, the FBI was previously asked to search storage units in Los Angeles as part of the widening international investigation into alleged child abuse material. Philippine police had already found illicit material on memory cards and a mobile phone. Thomas Markle Sr had previously denied possessing any illicit material. The Duchess of Sussex severed contact with her father last year after being informed of child abuse claims against him. [15][16]

The Duchess of Sussex is married to Prince Harry, the younger son of King Charles III. The Guardian reported that Meghan stated last month she was deeply distressed about allegations concerning the discovery of child sexual abuse images. The New York Post reported that Markle Sr could face at least ten years in prison following the arrest. [2][6][12]
