Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer pledged on Thursday to block any Supreme Court nominees presented by President Donald Trump whom Democrats view as right-wingers. The Washington Examiner, AP News, and The Hill all reported on the vow made by the Democratic leader from New York. AP News and Newser both noted that Schumer promised Senate Democrats would stop conservative appointments from joining the high court. [1][3][4][8]

Any vacancy on the Supreme Court over the next two years, resulting from a retirement or a death, would give President Trump the opportunity to nominate a new justice. The Washington Examiner reported that any nominee must undergo final confirmation by the Senate before taking office. [1]

The Supreme Court of the United States serves as the highest court in the federal judiciary. The court holds ultimate appellate jurisdiction over federal cases as well as state cases that involve questions of constitutional or federal law. [10]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, the Trump administration previously turned to the high court in an emergency petition asking to set aside 20,000 mail-in ballots in California shortly before the midterm elections. [12]
