The Labour government is facing criticism on Remembrance Sunday after Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy linked the commemoration of war dead to European Union relations. The Daily Mail and GB News both report that critics accused Labour of using the national day of remembrance to promote European Union links. [1][4]

According to the Daily Mail, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport drew criticism after likening the Erasmus+ student exchange scheme to European connections that veterans helped secure after the Second World War. The comments were published ahead of official events taking place across Britain and the Commonwealth. GB News reported that critics described the statement as tone deaf. [1][4]

Remembrance Sunday takes place on the second Sunday in November to honour British and Commonwealth military and civilian personnel who served in the two World Wars and later conflicts. The central National Service of Remembrance is held at the Cenotaph in London, where the monarch lays the first wreath ahead of a two-minute silence at 11:00 a.m. As FTMQ News reported earlier, King Charles III and senior members of the Royal Family attended the annual Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall on the eve of the service. [5][8][10]

Andy Burnham became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on 20 July 2026. As FTMQ News reported earlier, his administration has sought an agreement to align British food rules with European Union standards to reduce post-Brexit red tape on British exports. [6][9]
