At least 21 people died after a migrant boat capsized off the coast of Senegal, according to reports from Euronews, Firstpost, The Peninsula Qatar, NST Online, and NewsBytes. The Senegalese interior ministry announced the incident on Sunday, stating that the pirogue encountered difficulty off Kébémer in the northwest region of the country. [1][2][3][4][5]
Search and rescue operations are currently underway following the accident, Euronews reported. Senegalese authorities confirmed that one survivor has been rescued so far. In a public statement, the minister for the interior and public security expressed condolences to the families of the victims on behalf of the president and the government. [1]
The United Nations International Organization for Migration states that the Atlantic Route serves as a primary pathway for West African migrants trying to reach Europe, Euronews reported. The passage is widely recognized by the agency as dangerous for ocean travel. [1]
Maritime incidents involving West African migrant routes continue to cause severe casualties. As FTMQ News reported earlier, a separate migrant boat disaster off the coast of Djibouti in October resulted in at least 109 deaths with 116 people left missing. [8]
