The Labour Party has pulled out of power-sharing agreements with the Green Party in 11 local councils on November 2, 2026. BBC News reported that Labour's ruling National Executive Committee set out where the party is cutting ties. The decision affects local authority areas including Sheffield, Warwick, and Lewes, where Labour councillors will no longer remain in coalition with Green Party members. [1][3]
The move follows a motion passed by Green Party members in October entitled Zionism is racism. The adopted policy defined Zionism as an ideology supporting an ethnonationalist Jewish state in historic Palestine. Labour Party chair Bridget Phillipson stated that the policy crossed a line and that Labour cannot work at any level of government with a party that supports it. [1]
Before the official announcement, The Telegraph reported on November 1 that Labour was set to end almost half of its council coalitions with the Green Party over the dispute. Additionally, The Star reported on November 2 that Labour planned to propose running Sheffield Council alone after the administration was thrown into chaos by the motion. [2][4]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, senior Labour figures had previously warned that cooperation with the Greens was unlikely after the vote, with Labour MPs reporting the Green Party to the police over the motion. FTMQ News also previously noted that the Green Party of England and Wales passed the policy on October 4, which led to widespread fallout across local and national political relationships. [9][10]
