Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Local Government Secretary Angela Rayner are facing accusations of taking funds from Conservative-led rural councils to increase financial support for Labour-run urban town halls. The Daily Mail reported that critics accused the administration of rewarding failure, arguing that Tory-led local authorities operate more efficiently than their Labour counterparts. Similar criticisms were published by the Conservative Post and the Daily Express. [1][7][8]

Separately, the Guardian reported that Andy Burnham is launching a campaign targeting public transport passengers who play loud music without headphones. Transport guidance will allow local transport authorities to issue 100 pound fines for nuisance behaviour. The Guardian and the BBC both reported that the initiative aims to reduce unwanted noise on buses and trains. [2][3]

The Prime Minister also visited Scotland during the Scottish National Party conference in Aberdeen. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Andy Burnham has sought to offer First Minister John Swinney a collaborative agreement on deeper local devolution to shift powers away from Westminster and Holyrood. [5][6][15]

Andy Burnham has served as Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party since July 2026, following his election as Member of Parliament for Makerfield in June 2026. He previously served as Mayor of Greater Manchester from 2017 until 2026. [9]
