Senior Labour Party figures said it is very unlikely that Labour will work with the Green Party in the future following a Green vote adopting a policy that treats Zionism as a form of racism, the Guardian reported. The Independent, Workers Liberty, and the BBC also reported that the Green Party passed the Zionism is racism motion. [1][5][6][7]
According to the Guardian, one Labour minister stated that they could not foresee how the two parties could cooperate. A government official added that Labour should formally rule out a future coalition or formal arrangement with the Greens. The National Scot reported that Labour MPs have reported the Green Party to the police over the policy. [1][4]
The dispute occurs alongside electoral competition between the two parties in London. Al Jazeera reported that Green Party leader Zack Polanski is challenging Labour in a by-election for the Holborn and St Pancras seat, which Labour has held since its creation in 1983. [2][3]
At a recent meeting organized by a Muslim group in London ahead of the by-election, candidates from the Green Party and Liberal Democrats spoke to residents, Al Jazeera reported. The Labour candidate, Sagal Abdi Wali, did not attend, telling the Guardian that she had a prior obligation and received the invitation too late. [3]
