British adventurer Karl Bushby arrived in his hometown of Hull in England on Monday, completing a 28-year journey across four continents on foot. Deutsche Welle and the BBC reported that the 57-year-old was greeted by a crowd of around 500 people upon his return. Bushby told the crowd that he did not complete the journey alone, attributing his return to a large supporting team. [1][3][4]

The 50,000-kilometer trek, which is equivalent to 31,000 miles, began in Chile in November 1998, according to Deutsche Welle and the BBC. Deutsche Welle reported that Bushby traveled through the Americas, Russia, and parts of Central Asia and Europe. The journey strictly avoided vehicles and flights. [1][4][13]

The BBC reported that Bushby completed a major final leg of his journey on 5 October by swimming across the English Channel from France to Dover, landing at Shakespeare beach at 15:30 BST. Friends and family, including his father Keith Bushby, met him on the beach. Filmmaker Werner Herzog was also present, as he is directing a feature-length documentary on the journey titled Walk of Life. [4]

Bushby is a former paratrooper who served in the 3rd Battalion Parachute Regiment for 11 years after joining the British Army at age 16. During his 10,227-day expedition, he faced numerous obstacles, including crossing the Darien Gap, walking across the shifting ice of the Bering Strait in 2006, and swimming across the Caspian Sea.
