A sudden power failure brought trains across the north-west of England to a halt shortly before 14:00 on Wednesday, 6 August, BBC News reported. The power cut affected the Network Rail operating centre in Manchester. The outage left passengers stranded on platforms for hours, forcing some commuters to book hotel rooms for the night. [1]

The incident added to a difficult summer for train passengers across the network, according to BBC News. Repeated heatwaves required risk control measures including speed reductions to prevent damaged tracks, which resulted in further delays and cancellations alongside a serious derailment. [1]

The British railway system was originally transferred from government control into private hands during the privatisation of British Rail. That process began in 1994 and was largely completed by 1997. [2]

Experts warned that meeting the expectations of travellers could prove challenging for publicly owned rail services, BBC News reported. Network operators continue to face difficulties managing infrastructure risks during severe weather events. [1]
