At least four people were killed on Sunday when a lorry loaded with explosives detonated in Tolima province in western Colombia, BBC News and cedarnews.net reported. Tolima governor Adriana Magali Matiz stated in a post on X that a two-month-old baby girl was among the deceased. The lorry exploded near a military base in the town of Planadas. [1][2][3]
BBC News reported that the blast caused damage to a nearby hospital and several other buildings. Although it remains unclear who carried out the bombing, the attack appeared to target the military base. BBC News noted that armed criminal groups have recently increased attacks against security forces. [1]
The increase in violence appears to be in retaliation for a security offensive ordered by the new right-wing President, Abelardo de la Espriella, BBC News reported. President de la Espriella was sworn into office in August. [1]
Colombia has historically struggled with internal conflict, including mid-20th-century bipartisan violence and a long-running armed conflict involving Marxist guerrillas, right-wing paramilitaries, and drug cartels. [5]
