A federal judge has temporarily blocked construction on a proposed 250-foot triumphal arch backed by President Donald Trump. According to the Daily Mail, CBS News, and the Wall Street Journal, the judge halted the project shortly after a federal planning panel voted to approve the monument. The Daily Mail reported that Judge Tanya Chutkan granted a temporary restraining order on Thursday night, stopping the Trump administration from beginning work immediately. [1][2][3][4]

The court ruling followed a decision by the National Capital Planning Commission to clear the project. The New York Post reported that the panel voted 8-4 to approve the plans for the 250-foot-high monument, which the administration wanted to begin building right away. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the commission's vote cleared a primary hurdle for the monument even as court action remained pending. [1][3][10]

The planned structure is set to stand on a traffic circle on Columbia Island in Washington, D.C., located between Arlington National Cemetery and the Arlington Memorial Bridge across the Potomac River from the Lincoln Memorial. The 250-foot arch was proposed by Donald Trump in 2025 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence. [1][3][9]

The project has faced political opposition and multiple legal challenges. As FTMQ News reported earlier, lawsuits to block the structure have been filed by Washington, D.C., Virginia, Arlington County, and two Vietnam War veterans. Ynetnews and NBC News also noted that the monument has faced lawsuits, safety concerns, and public backlash. [5][6][8][11]
