A United States federal judge has ordered a temporary block on the construction of President Donald Trump's planned 250-foot triumphal arch in Washington, DC. Al Jazeera and the Daily Mail both reported that US District Judge Tanya Chutkan granted a temporary restraining order to pause the project for 14 days. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the temporary restraining order was issued shortly after a planning panel gave approval for work to begin. [1][3][12]

The pause comes despite statements from the Trump administration that construction could begin immediately. Al Jazeera reported that the National Capital Planning Commission approved the arch in an 8-4 final vote on Thursday following a nine-hour hearing. Dozens of witnesses testified against the construction project during the hearing, according to Al Jazeera. [1][3]

The planned structure, referred to as the Arc de Trump, is designed to stand 76 metres or 250 feet tall near Arlington National Cemetery. The Daily Mail reported that President Trump has pursued the massive monument to help reshape the capital region. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the arch was originally proposed in 2025 to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence. [1][3][12]

The construction project has faced multiple legal challenges from local governments and advocacy groups. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Washington, DC, and Virginia previously filed a lawsuit against the National Park Service and the Department of the Interior to block the monument. Arlington County and two Vietnam War veterans have also filed earlier lawsuits targeting the proposed arch. [13]
