Washington, D.C., and the Commonwealth of Virginia filed a lawsuit on Saturday to stop the construction of a proposed triumphal arch backed by President Donald Trump. UPI, The Washington Post, Axios, The Hill, the Washington Examiner, and notus.org all reported on the legal challenge. Axios specified that the proposed arch would stand 250 feet tall. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
The lawsuit names the National Park Service and the Department of the Interior as defendants. According to UPI, the two plaintiffs argue that the project is flagrantly unlawful and will change the landscape of the District of Columbia. [1]
Several other legal challenges have already targeted the project. UPI reported that earlier lawsuits include one filed by Arlington County, Virginia, and another brought by a historian alongside two Vietnam War veterans. A judge heard the veterans' case on Friday and appeared skeptical of the federal government's arguments. [1]
The latest legal action comes during a period of frequent court challenges for the second Trump administration. In the first two months of the presidency, 127 lawsuits were filed against the administration. [9]
