Irish Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill has defended the standard of care at Cork University Hospital, stating she would have no hesitation in recommending the facility to a sick relative. As reported by irishexaminer.com, her comments follow a letter written by nine clinical directors at the hospital to Taoiseach Miche!l Martin regarding ongoing staffing issues. MacNeill highlighted recruitment figures for the hospital and stated there was no question that hospital chief executive Jennifer Kearney had been punished after speaking out about staffing levels. [1]

The intervention follows earlier concerns raised by senior medical staff at the facility. As FTMQ News reported earlier, nine clinical directors sent a confidential eight-page letter to the Taoiseach requesting the urgent approval of 172 priority staffing posts and an independent assessment of staffing needs. Almost 100 patients had spent more than 24 hours on emergency department trolleys at the hospital as overcrowding mounted before the winter virus season. [6]

The hospital's management and recruitment performance had previously drawn criticism from the health minister. As FTMQ News reported earlier, MacNeill questioned why Cork University Hospital failed to reduce overcrowding despite recruiting 233 new staff members, noting that other hospitals receiving similar staffing increases had successfully lowered trolley counts. [7]

Cork University Hospital opened on 30 November 1978 in Wilton, Cork, and operates as a public academic teaching hospital affiliated with University College Cork. It is managed by the South/Southwest Hospital Group under the Health Service Executive. Employing over 5,000 people, it is one of two major trauma centres in Ireland and delivers acute medical, surgical, paediatric, maternity, and mental health services on a single campus. [2][4]
