Rory McIlroy moved into contention at the Abu Dhabi Championship on Friday after shooting a second-round 63. Radio Kerry, the Irish Times, BBC Sport, and CBS Sports all report that the Northern Irish golfer made 11 birdies during his round at Yas Links. The score placed him at 11-under-par at the midway point of the tournament. [1][2][3][6][7][10][11]

The performance leaves McIlroy one shot behind the joint leaders. Radio Kerry and the Irish Times both report that Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, and Francesco Laporta hold the lead at 12-under-par, while BBC Sport notes that Sam Bairstow, Adrian Meronk, and Matthew Jordan are tied alongside McIlroy at 11-under-par. [1][2][3]

The second-round score came after McIlroy suffered an early setback in the tournament. As FTMQ News reported earlier, rules officials assessed McIlroy a two-shot penalty after his opening round for improving his lie on the 12th hole, which adjusted his initial score of 68 to a 70. BBC Sport and The Independent also reported on the penalty. [3][11][15]

Following Friday's round, Radio Kerry reported that McIlroy worked with coach Brad Faxon and saw encouraging signs in his game. The Irish Times reported that McIlroy is third in the Race to Dubai standings as he pursues leader Eugenio Chacarra and second-placed Patrick Reed. McIlroy stated that he gave himself a great chance for the weekend. [1][2]
