Nine clinical directors at Cork University Hospital have written a confidential letter to Taoiseach Micheál Martin requesting an independent assessment of hospital staffing needs and existing vacancies. As reported by the Irish Examiner and the Irish Times, the letter comes as regional hospitals face intense pressure from overcrowding ahead of the winter season. [1][2]
The Irish Times reported that the eight-page letter was sent to the Taoiseach and Fianna Fáil Cork South-Central TD Séamus McGrath. In the document, the doctors urged the immediate approval of 172 priority posts. They also requested that the Taoiseach hold Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill to account regarding the accuracy of her public statements about the hospital. [2]
The Irish Examiner reported that nearly 100 patients faced waits of more than 24 hours on emergency department trolleys across the country. According to Health Service Executive data cited by the outlet, seven of those waiting over 24 hours yesterday were aged over 75. The national virus tracker shows no unusual spikes in flu, covid-19, or RSV cases so far, but hospitals in Cork, Kerry, and Limerick are already under severe strain. [1]
The head of government in Ireland holds the title of Taoiseach. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Taoiseach Micheál Martin has also faced recent calls to intervene on other national issues, including Palestinian student visa rejections. [6][7][8]
