The Irish government is preparing to lower full-time childcare costs by at least 1,000 euros per child annually as part of Budget 2027 negotiations.

The Irish government plans to cut the cost of full-time childcare for young children by at least 1,000 euros per year for each child in the upcoming budget, RTE reported. Discussions on the final budget measures were set to continue as officials worked to finalize the exact figures following weekend negotiations. [1][2]

According to RTE, the proposed savings will apply to families with children in childcare for 45 hours a week. The cost reductions will be achieved through changes to the existing 96.30 euro weekly subsidy. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the measures also aim to reduce the maximum weekly fee of 280 euros. [2][8]

The Irish Examiner reported that the proposed package could save some parents 1,000 euros a year, but local representatives have raised concerns. According to the Irish Independent, a Wicklow childcare chair expressed fear that Budget 2027 will fail to lower costs for parents who live in rural areas with access problems. [1]

In separate budget discussions reported by the Irish Examiner, the government is likely to remove planned carbon tax increases on kerosene and home heating oil. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the full Budget 2027 package is scheduled to be unveiled on Tuesday. [4][9]
