A United States judge has sentenced 39-year-old Guatemalan national Rigoberto Ramon Miranda-Orozco to 30 years in prison for his role in the human smuggling deaths of 53 migrants in Texas, UPI and Al Jazeera reported. U.S. District Judge Orlando Garcia handed down the sentence on Tuesday. The case stems from a June 2022 incident where dead and dying migrants were found inside an abandoned tractor-trailer in San Antonio, Texas, according to UPI. [1][3]
Miranda-Orozco pleaded guilty in July to federal human-smuggling charges, which included conspiracy to bring an alien into the United States resulting in death, UPI reported. Al Jazeera noted that his sentencing came more than a year after authorities extradited him from Guatemala. [1][3]
The victims died after being trapped inside the tractor-trailer in dangerously high heat, Al Jazeera reported. The tragedy was described by Al Jazeera as one of the deadliest human smuggling events along the United States border with Mexico in recent history. [3]
Following the sentencing, Judge Garcia stated that the 30-year term delivers accountability for a tragedy that claimed 53 lives, according to UPI. [1]
