Wales is marking 60 years since the Aberfan disaster, when a colliery spoil tip collapsed on 21 October 1966. BBC News reported that black slurry thundered down the mountainside at 09:15, engulfing Pantglas Junior School and nearby homes on the last day before the half-term holiday. A total of 144 people died in the disaster, including 116 children and 28 adults. [1][7][8]

The spoil tip had been built on a mountain slope above the village of Aberfan, near Merthyr Tydfil, directly over a natural spring. Heavy rainfall caused roughly 150,000 cubic metres of waste material to saturate with water, liquefy, and slide downhill into the village as a debris avalanche. It destroyed the school, a farm, and a row of houses within moments. [1][7][8]

An official inquiry by the Aberfan Disaster Tribunal placed the blame entirely on the National Coal Board and nine named employees. The tribunal cited a total absence of tipping policy and noted that the organisation persistently ignored warnings about the site. [7][8]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, Prime Minister Andy Burnham visited the Aberfan memorial garden ahead of the anniversary. He laid a wreath alongside survivor Jeff Edwards to honor those who died in the tragedy. [9]

BBC News noted that the catastrophe reshaped the local community and permanently changed attitudes toward industrial safety standards across Britain. [1]
